Maintenance and Use of Wooden Barrels for Wine and Beer Aging
Oak barrels are essential for aging quality wine and beer, giving the beverage a unique aroma and taste. Proper maintenance ensures long barrel life and prevents unpleasant flavors and bacterial growth.
Preparing a New Wooden Barrel
- Prepare solution: 10g tartaric acid per liter of water
- Soak barrel for 4-5 days
- Empty and drain thoroughly
- Disinfect with sulfur strip
- Fill with wine immediately
Note! Monitor aging time as new barrels release more tannins. Check wine taste regularly.
Cleaning Used Barrels
- Clean with anhydrous soda solution (1kg soda per 10L hot water)
- Brush inner surface thoroughly
- Rinse with clean water
- Soak in tartaric acid solution (10g/L) for 2-3 days
- Disinfect with sulfur strip (1/4 strip per 100L)
Storing Empty Barrels
- Rinse with clean water
- Let drain for 24h
- Burn sulfur strip (1/4 strip per 100L)
- Seal openings with silicone bungs
- Store in humid room (70% humidity)
- Keep at temperature 12-17°C
- Repeat sulfuring every 3 months
Attention: It's not recommended to keep barrels empty. Avoid leaving dirty barrels or barrels with wine residue standing.
